What is it ?

Unlike most other cancers impact of the surgical management of the head and neck cancers is immediately noticeable in social settings. This is because onco-surgical resection invariably results in large part of tissue defects that are not only impossible to close and if not restored to its near original form, the patient suffers from facial disfigurement, altered speech, salivation, inability to swallow and deviation of airway.

All these mutilating surgeries leave a psychological scar on these patients. Their quality of life is impaired. They are depressed. But now it is proven that with the help of plastic and reconstructive surgery, especially micro-vascular reconstructive surgery quality of life of the patients can be improved. We can provide good functional and cosmetic result in most of the patient with the disease. They can lead normal life with little or no limitations. With an array of pedicled and free flaps specially suited to the requirements of an individual patient, the deformity of this extensive surgery is minimized to a great extent. MICROVASCULAR FREE-TISSUE TRANSFER allows them to reconstruct the most complex of secondary facial defects, with the goal of achieving maximal restoration and improving patients’ self-confidence.

In “FREE FLAP SURGERY.” the surgeon takes tissue and blood vessels from one part of the person’s body and moves them to the damaged part. The surgeon connects the blood vessels using small stitches visible with a microscope. The stitches connect the tissue and blood vessels to those at the new site .

In Head and neck surgery, plastic surgeons sometimes also need with changes the jawbone shape. A reconstructive surgeon may harvest bone from the leg to the face. This restores the jawbone’s shape and often its function.

Miscellaneous post cancer excision reconstruction –
May be soft tissue sarcomas of the limb, skin cancer of the face warranting reconstruction post cancer excision can be done with local, regional or as well as microvascular free flap. Malignant nerve sheath tumour excision of the limb post cancer excision can be salvaged by nerve reconstruction. All these cases are closely assessed, treatment planned, customised and implemented by Dr Nitin Ghag and his team.
