Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty / TummyTuck in Mumbai

Tummy tuck surgery, medically known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery performed to give the abdomen a new look through the removal of excessive fat and skin and by tightening the muscles on the abdomen. This type of surgery works best for those who, due to any reason, have gone through weight changes, pregnancy, or ageing resulting in saggy skin that does not behave well with dieting or exercising.

What is Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Tummy tuck surgery generally begins with an incision made along the lower abdomen by the surgeon, often hidden within the bikini line to conceal as much of the scarring as possible. In the procedure, excess skin and fat are taken out, while the abdominal muscles are pulled tight for a more contoured appearance. There are basically two kinds of tummy tuck surgery that a patient can undergo: a full abdominoplasty targeting the whole abdomen and a mini-abdominoplasty for the lower abdomen.

Types of Tummy Tuck Procedures

  • Full Abdominoplasty
This is an extended technique in which a greater amount of skin and fat is taken from most of the abdomen. The muscles of the abdomen are tightened, and sometimes the navel will be relocated to a higher position for a more natural appearance. This works best for those who have many loose, sagging tissues, or have muscle separation.
  • Mini Abdominoplasty
Less invasive for the lower abdomen, using only a smaller incision; for patients with only minimal skin laxity, quicker recovery is expected. The navel is usually not disturbed.
  • Extended Abdominoplasty
Indications include where there is excess skin and fat not only on the abdominal areas but also on the sides and lower back. These areas treated by the surgery make contours more balanced; hence, it is ideal for patients who have undergone weight loss of a large amount.

What to Expect During the Procedure

Tummy tuck surgery usually takes 2 to 4 hours depending on the circumstances, under general anaesthesia. The surgery involves the removal of loose skin and fat especially from the lower abdomen, and tightening of abdominal muscles to add to the firmness. Generally, most patients combine this surgery with liposuction for optimal results. In a full abdominoplasty, transposition of the umbilicus may also be performed to attain a natural-appearing ventral anatomy, whereas a mini-abdominoplasty will target the area below the navel.
